Sponsoring international INSOL conference

03-06-2011 12:32

Almost two hundred participants, of more than 20 different nationalities, gathered in the capital of Estonia on May 27, to attend the insolvency and restructuring focused conference “A Return to Prosperity?“. One of the main sponsors of the conference was Swedbank.

Across the Baltic countries we had to deal with various insolvency cases recently. The lawyers-specialists participating in the international Insol Europe’s Eastern European Countries’ Committee Conference, said that an efficient legal environment is one of the key factors leading to sustainable growth in the region. A crucial part of the efficient legal environment is an insolvency regime that is really up to date with market needs, stated also Tiina Sepa, Swedbank’s Chief Legal Counsel of Baltic Banking, who represented Swedbank with her colleagues at the meeting.

The Tallinn conference covered a wide range of topics from the general economic situation in the Eastern European region and governmental challenges after the financial crisis, to more specific areas related to insolvency, e.g. sale of assets and protection of insolvent debtor`s intellectual property.

As a leading bank of the region, we find it important to support the efforts of local and international experts in sharing their experiences and best practice in this area. We also wish to encourage local governments to develop the existing regimes further by thinking of new ways of co-operation, such as the newly created Nordic-Baltic Insolvency Network. The network will concentrate on the possibilities of harmonizing certain aspects of insolvency frameworks in the region with a goal to raise investor confidence. Additional aim is to see that the assets in the region will be protected and insolvencies and restructurings handled according to similar principles.
