Flash comment: Lithuania - February 14, 2012

Prices increased by 0.3% in January, average annual inflation will decelerate

  • In January Lithuanian consumer prices increased by 0.3% after deflation in December. In line with our expectations, annual inflation remained unchanged at 3.4%. Although the average annual inflation increased by 0.1 percentage point to 4.2%, it is likely to decrease during the year.
  • Fluctuating global commodity prices will be the main factor driving prices in Lithuania this year. Consumer inflation expectations remain elevated, but due to fiscal austerity and high unemployment domestic price pressures will remain low. We forecast average annual inflation to be 2.5% this year and by 3% in 2013.
